The Donovan Mitchell trade ended in a shocking conclusion on Thursday afternoon. After months of Mitchell being linked to the Knicks, it seemed like a matter of time before Mitchell would end up in New York. The Knicks had the picks to pull off a trade and the fact that Mitchell grew up a Knicks fan made it seem like a guarantee that Mitchell would end up in New York. But ultimately the Cleveland Cavaliers swooped in at the last minute to grab Mitchell. Here are the full details of the trade,
Cavaliers receive
Donovan Mitchell
Jazz receive
Collin Sexton
Lauri Markkanen
Ochai Agbaji
2025 first-round pick
2026 pick swap
2027 first-round pick
2028 pick swap
2029 first-round pick
When I first heard the number of picks dealt for Mitchell I was startled. However the more I think about the trade the more I like it for Cleveland. Mitchell gives the Cavs a 4th All-star caliber player. Mitchell is the perfect fit for the Cavs. Mitchell helps take the pressure off of Garland in the backcourt. The elite scoring of Mitchell paired with Garland’s playmaking makes the two a perfect fit. Sure the Cavs might not win or contend for a title but they’ll still be a competitive team. Not only that but the young core of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen is up there with the best young cores in the league. This slates the Cavs to be a title-contending team in the next few years. On Utah’s side of things, it’s simple you get a lot of picks and look towards the future. Cleveland’s picks might not be great but getting the number of picks Utah did is a big win. Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, and Ochai Agbaji are all young players who fit Utah’s timeline and have potential upside. This is another move for Utah to continue to rebuild and gain assets. Utah is starting one of the deeper and well-executed rebuilds we’ve seen in recent year. Overall this is a trade that I see as a win for both sides.
